Tampa wedding photography: Doubletree Resort

Chantel and Kai picked a great date for their beach wedding at the Doubletree Resort on Reddington Shores: 10/10/10. I was honored to be on hand to capture lots of memories from their special day.

We began with pictures of their preparations. While they were each in separate rooms, they shared a lot of the same emotions and excitement...

The ceremony took place on the beautiful white sand beach behind the Doubletree Hotel...

After every ceremony we shoot, I always ask the bride and groom to take a walk together alone. It gives them some time to really appreciate the moment... and it always results in some great pictures, too.

Chantel's choice of orange for her colors worked equally well on the beach, and inside at the reception.

There were quite a few fun and special moments...

Belinda and Ray--Sirata Beach Resort Wedding Photography

The nice thing about planning your beach wedding at hotels like the Sirata Resort on St. Petersburg Beach is that if Mother Nature doesn't cooperate on your wedding day, you can move the entire affair inside and be very well taken care of.

That's exactly what Belinda and Ray did, and it all worked out just fine.

We began shooting their wedding pictures about an hour before the ceremony, as the bride was making her final preparations...

And of course we took some shots of Ray and the Groomsmen, too.

The planners at the Sirata were concerned about rain clouds in the area, and suggested moving the ceremony to a pre-determined covered location... which turned out to be a great spot for their beautiful wedding ceremony.

After the ceremony, the sun started peeking out so we took advantage of the opportunity to head out to the beach...

Belinda and Ray had originally planned on an outdoor reception, but due to the weather conditions, the Sirata offered to move it indoors to the Grand Palm Ballroom... which turned out to be a perfect setting.

Tonjia and Russell-University of Tampa

"I like flowers, and we both like architecture", Tonjia said when she first contacted me about scheduling a wedding portrait session. I instantly knew that the University of Tampa campus would be the perfect setting for this classically romantic couple.

We met on a warm September evening for a one-hour shoot.

Neither Tonjia or Russell were particularly comfortable having their pictures taken. That is perfectly normal and understandable, so I began by asking them to just take a walk through the park... and pretend I wasn't there.

We found a nice bench in a secluded area of the park where they could sit together and relax. "Do what comes naturally", I told them... and they were happy to oblige...

The metal scultpture in the middle of the park provided another terrific setting...

From there, we moved to the veranda of the Henry B. Plant museum to capture a variety of shots, using the beautiful historic architecture as a backdrop. It's one of my favorite locations in Tampa for both wedding and engagement portraits.

While I don't typically direct my clients through pre-determined poses, I couldn't resist asking Tonjia and Russell to pose in a very specific way for this shot. It's definitely one of my favorites...

These are of course just a small sample of the images I captured for this terrific couple. We had a great time together, and I truly wish them well on their new life together!

Danielle and Andrew--Anna Maria Island

Here are some sample photos from a recent wedding I shot for Danielle and Andrew. It's great example of our photo-journalistic style of wedding photography, which tells the story of your special day in pictures.

The couple rented a beach house on Anna Maria Island, and that's where we started...

The house was decorated well, which gave me the opportunity to capture lots of memorable details.

Danielle had a lot of help getting ready (she had six bridesmaids!)

Then, it was time for a short walk to the beach, just in time for the ceremony...

The setting on Anna Maria Island was perfect for the after-ceremony "formal" shots. There's a reason they call it the Beach Wedding Capital of Florida.

Afterwards, we headed back to the beach house for the reception, where the guys from DnA DJ services did a great job keeping the party rockin!

Tampa Wedding Photographers Prices: By the hour?

One thing you'll probably notice if you're shopping around is that many Tampa wedding photographers are now basing their packages and prices on the amount of photography time you'd like to purchase.

I'm a big fan of this pricing model, primarily because it lets my clients choose the package that's right for their particular wedding. Whether you're planning an intimate one-hour beach ceremony, or a much longer affair, you'll likely find a competitively priced package on our website that's right for you.

As a bride-to-be, however, it's hard to know how many hours of photography you'll actually need for your wedding day. Here's a quick guide to help you decide:

Preparations

If you'd like photos of your preparations prior to the ceremony, as well as those of your fiance, factor one hour into your package.

I typically start by shooting candid photos of the bride and groom's individual preparations, taking special care to capture details. From there, I move on to guest arrivals and final preparations at the site of your ceremony.

As these are often some of the most memorable moments (and photos), I'd strongly suggest including time for preparation photography, if your budget allows.

Ceremony

It's best to factor in one hour of photography for your ceremony.

While the ceremony itself may be significantly shorter, you'll want to allow plenty of time for pictures of your guests being seated, the wedding party (and yourself) walking down the aisle, and other important moments before the ceremony actually begins.

"Formals"

It's important to factor in one hour of photography for your after-ceremony "formal" shots, even if you prefer more a more casual approach.

From pictures of the bride and groom by themselves, to those with the bridal party and family, we'll need some time to gather the right people, arrange them together, and of course shoot the photos.

I like to begin by asking the bride and groom to take a walk together and treasure the moment, while I unobstrusively capture some candid shots. This alone can take 15-20 minutes, but it's well worth it as the pictures are always great.

Reception

Most couples factor in two to three hours of photography for their wedding reception. It really depends on what you have planned, but if you're hosting a full reception, factor in enough time to allow us to capture images of all the important moments, up to and including the cutting of your cake.

Conversely, if you're planning a more informal dinner, one hour of photography very well may suffice.

A Word Of Caution

Unfortunately, beyond the amount of photography time stipulated, no two Tampa wedding photographers' packages are alike. Many do not include the price of retouching your images, displaying them in an online gallery, or delivering them on a high-resolution CD... so you'll end up paying extra.

Photo-Journalistic vs Traditional Tampa Wedding Photography

Yesterday I was on Indian Rocks Beach shooting a small, intimate sunset wedding ceremony arranged by Florida Gulf Beach Weddings. The couple (Peggy and Brian) wanted their wedding pictures to reflect the fun, casual vibe of their day.

It was a perfect match for my style of "photo-journalistic" Tampa wedding photography. It's all about capturing the details and moments that tell the story of a couple's wedding day in pictures.

Memorable details...

And priceless moments...

After the ceremony, we walked down to the surf. "It's a beautiful Saturday evening, we're on the beach, and you just got married", I told them.

"Just take a walk together and enjoy the moment. Have fun and don't pay any attention to me".

It gave me the opportunity to capture natural images that show their genuine love and appreciation for one another...

While I was shooting them in the surf, I noticed another photographer taking formal pictures of a different couple. Like us, they were down at the edge of the water. But as a formal photographer, he was meticulously posing them to capture the "perfect" sunset kiss.

From the placement of their hands, to the way they were standing, everything was posed.

I have a huge amount of respect for formal wedding photographers. It takes an incredible amount of patience, planning, and talent, and this guy totally knew what he was doing.

But while I'm sure the pictures he shot will be absolutely beautiful, they will inherently lack the natural spontaneity that you see in shots like these:

There's something about the way that Peggy and Brian are walking together, step for step in perfect unison, that makes that first one special. You can't "pose" pictures like that... they just kind of happen.

In any case, that's the difference between my style of casual, photo-journalistic Tampa wedding photography, and the more traditional style of so many other talented photographers in Tampa Bay.

Which style is right for your wedding or engagement portrait shoot? Only you know that... but choose carefully, because there really is a big difference!

Tampa Wedding Photography: The first kiss

Despite the anticipation, planning, rushing, and worrying that are all part of weddings, they are of course really about one thing: A couple's public expression of their love, devotion, and commitment to each other for the rest of their lives.

And nowhere during a ceremony is that more evident than the moment when they hear the words, "I now pronounce you man and wife", look into each other's eyes, and seal it with their first kiss.

Here are some of my favorite "first kiss" moments from weddings I've photographed around Tampa Bay. Like every wedding, each of these moments is special and unique in their own way...

This first one is from Kathy and Larry's wedding on Clearwater Beach. From a photography standpoint, it's one of my all-time favorites, and I use it often in our advertising. Really a dramatic moment...

The next is from a casual, backyard wedding I shot in Port Richey for Martha and Jim. When Martha first contacted me, she told me she was marrying, "the man of my dreams". They were so happy here...

Darlene and Jim were married on the beautiful beachfront deck behind Oystercatcher's restaurant at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. Yet another very beautiful first kiss...

Sometimes it's the moment right before the kiss that's even better. Check out the excitement in Kristin's face right before Toby leaned in to kiss her. "It was the happiest day of my life", she told me later.

Here's another moment right before Marlese and James' first kiss. I love the look on the officiate's face:-)

Tampa Engagement Portrait Photography: Chantel and Kai

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of spending a Sunday afternoon shooting Chantel and Kai's engagement portraits. The couple chose the University of Tampa campus as their setting.

Chantel and Kai share a very deep love for each other, and have some incredible chemistry that made this a really fun shoot.

The key to capturing great images on an engagement photo shoot is finding a way to put the couple at ease in front of the camera. I typically start by asking them to take a walk, as we did here, down a beautiful tree-covered path in the park...

Chantel and Kai had no problem relaxing and being themselves in front of the camera...

Then, we headed up to the veranda on the front of the historic Henry B. Plant museum...

Up next, after a clothing change... we took some shots on the back veranda of the museum. It's one of my favorite spots on the entire University of Tampa campus for portrait photography, especially in the late afternoon when the sun's shadows are longer.

I did some post production work on both of these next ones to give them an "art-sy" sort of look that the couple wanted.

As the sun continued setting, we went back outside to get some fun shots in the park...

Another great spot for portraits in the UT campus is in and around the metal sculpture in the center of the park.

These are of course just a small sampling of the images I captured for Chantel and Kai on their engagement portrait photo shoot (there were over 90 total).

I'll be photographing their wedding on Clearwater Beach later in the year, and it should be a great time. Congratulations, Chantel and Kai!

Tampa Wedding Photography: What makes us different and unique

One of the things I hear over and over again from clients is how my style of Tampa wedding photography is somehow "different" from other photographers. That's the word they always use: "Different".

If they were using that word to describe my personality or looks, I'd have a complex by now:-)

But in all seriousness, I really take that as a compliment. In a competitive market filled with hundreds of Tampa wedding photographers, it's nice to be singled out as being "different" by clients, especially when it's my creative work they're talking about.

A lot of it has to do with the photo-journalistic style of photography I use to shoot weddings. Here are some examples:

There's a bit of a story behind this first one. Kelsey (the bride) and Herald came all the way down to Tampa from Eagan, Minnesota with their family and friends to get married on the beach. Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not invited.

After a three-hour rain delay on Indian Rocks Beach, the weather finally cleared and I caught this candid shot of Kelsey making her final preparations. The look on her face says it all... everything was going to be OK, and she looked beautiful.

While Kelsey was inside getting ready, Herald took advantage of the break in the weather to go outside, loosen up, and toss the football around with his groomsmen. This unposed shot really captured the essence of the fun they were having.

This next one is from Kathy and Larry's wedding on Clearwater Beach. Larry brought along his own camera to take a picture of his bride as she approached him for their beach ceremony. I got plenty of shots of her, too... but couldn't resist snapping this one. It was a classic moment:-)

After their ceremony, Kathy and Larry took a walk down the beach together to celebrate their new life together, which gave me an opportunity to capture this moment. I don't think they even realized I was there. Again, the benefit of shooting candid, unposed images.

This is one of my favorites. Kristen (the bride) was in her hotel room making her final preparations. but running a little late. Her daughter was on the phone letting the rest of the wedding party know. Truly, a classic moment.

Minutes later, they arrived at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center for the ceremony... in a bit of a rush:-)

Of course, I always take time to capture the more traditional images at each wedding I photograph, and you can see plenty of them on the Image Galleries page of our Tampa wedding photography website. But it's pictures like these that are often the most memorable, and "different".

Tampa Engagement Portrait Photography: Farah and Johnny

I met Farah and Johnny on the beautiful beach at Honeymoon Island for their engagement portrait shoot, and had a blast. Not only are they deeply in love with each other... but as you'll see they're also deeply in love the New Orleans Saints!

We began with some close ups...

... and later went up on a deck overlooking the Gulf of Mexico...

One thing a lot of people forget about is that Honeymoon Island is filled with paths like this one. It's not just a beautiful beach.

As the sun began to set, we took some shots like this down near the surf...

Then, the Saints jersey came out for these shots...
